Since the introduction of a brand strategy as a core business objective in 1997, Mazda Motor Corporation has been aggressively promoting emotional connections with target customers by leveraging its brand expressed as "Stylish, Insightful, and Spirited."
Mazda introduced its brand message "Zoom-Zoom" at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show. It is Mazda's intention to deliver "exciting and exhilarating driving experiences" to people who remember the love of motion as a child, backed by Mazda's corporate culture of creativity and innovation.
With the theme "Zoom-Zoom to the future," Mazda showcases the continually evolving Mazda brand and the future of "Zoom-Zoom" at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show. You will see further innovations in the Zoom-Zoom spirit that has been embodied by consecutive successes of next generation products ·the Atenza, Demio and RX-8, as well as the newly introduced Axela. In addition, you will see a glimpse of Mazda's future products that are based on these successes.
To allow visitors to fully experience the world
of "Zoom-Zoom to the future," Mazda
has endeavored to express the Mazda brand in
every aspect of its booth. Designed around
a main stage, the three-dimensional layout
naturally guides visitors around the stand.
Illuminated screens that envelop the booth
with a soft yellow light and the bamboo flooring
are part of Mazda's globally aligned design
concept. |

Mazda IBUKI [Reference exhibit
(prototype)] |
 |
 |
 |
Mazda
IBUKI, a further evolution of Mazda' Stylish,
Insightful and Spirited DNA, takes
the roadster concept of "the oneness
between car and driver" to its logical
conclusion, presenting the ultimate statement
of a near-future lightweight sports convertible.
Our aims were "The absolute in driving
pleasure that a lightweight, open-top sports
car can offer," "Support of driving
functions with an advanced design that
maintains genuine roadster identity" and "Comfort
and safety with the top down."
Essential to the success of Mazda IBUKI is a super front-midship
layout that places all major components within the wheelbase,
even with an in-line four-cylinder engine. Compared with the
layout in the Mazda Roadster/MX-5, the engine is positioned
about 400mm further to the rear, made possible by locating
the air conditioner unit behind the seats. Thanks to the super
front-midship layout, yaw inertia moment has been greatly reduced
to achieve the all-important "oneness between car and
driver."

 |
In addition, unique construction featuring
upper and lower backbone frames and lightweight
materials employed at every strategic point
achieves high rigidity comparable to that of
a closed body structure, while maintaining
the extremely low weight demanded of a sports
car.
Mazda IBUKI is powered by a new, lightweight and compact MZR 1.6-liter
in-line four-cylinder direct-injection engine equipped with Sequential
Valve Timing & Lift for intake and exhaust valves. Also included
is a hybrid motor that partly serves to control engine vibration,
allowing use of a lighter flywheel for heightened response.
Mazda IBUKI's exterior styling features an oval body shape which
evokes a look of tension in repose, and the 18-inch wheels and
tires at the four corners of the body accentuate the car's well-planted
stance. The body form clearly communicates the snug yet comfortable
fit both driver and passenger enjoy, and its front and rear views
inherit the familiar look of the first-generation roadster married
to a more futuristic design.
Inside, the passenger seat's integration with the body clearly
establishes the unity between interior and exterior, while the
air conditioner unit behind the seats allows independent spot cooling
for more efficient climate control during open-top driving. What's
more, a four-point active roll bar built into the front pillars
and rear cowl section instantly lifts up under impact sensor control
to protect occupants in the event of a rollover.

 |
The interior includes a comfortable 2+2 cabin
with a practical luggage space; an instrument
panel integrated with the high-rigidity annular
aluminum frame giving a robust, sporty ambience
to the cabin; and an innovative swing seatback
design that allows the front seats to be swivelled
towards the center for easier access to the
rear.
The Twin-Lift Hatchback design features dual hatches with two opening
modes: a longitudinal hinge in the center of the roof allows individual
opening of the hatches, or they can be opened together in the conventional
hatchback manner. This unique structure enables easy loading and
unloading according to size and shape of luggage.
Mazda KUSABI easily achieves the levels of driving excitement expected
of a Mazda sports car thanks to a minimized yaw inertia moment,
a high-rigidity body featuring an aluminum frame, and the same
highly-evaluated suspension system as Demio/Mazda2. The MZR 1.3-liter,
supercharged engine with intercooler and dual S-VT delivers powerful
performance even in the low-rpm range, and a newly-developed starter
and idle-stop mechanism enable "silent start" for smooth
starting/stopping and higher fuel efficiency. Six-speed Automatic
Shift Manual transmission offers responsive shift feel and improves
fuel efficiency.

Mazda WASHU features a host of advanced technologies.
The deployable instrument panel is equipped
with a retractable steer-by-wire steering wheel
that further enhances ease of entry and exit
and also offers improved security. The large
eight-inch LCD multi-information display is
controlled by a trackpad, and video monitors
show the area around and behind the vehicle,
eliminating the need for room and side mirrors.

|
 |
 |
The bold design is attractive from the very
first glance, while its refined sophistication
continues to please the eye over time. The
four- and five-door versions have noticeable
design differences, yet both fascinate with
their style. And Mazda's unique craftsmanship
realizes a new standard of quality which blends
sporty excitement with comfort that delights
all the senses.
Mazda Axela/Mazda3's unprecedented values are given concrete form
in a package designed for true versatility, with world-class safety
thanks to further advances in the high-rigidity safety body, and
superbly clean performance proven by the Japanese "U-LEV" certification
given for all models.

RX-8 Hydrogen RE is also the focus of a variety
of environmental protection technologies in
areas other than the engine. The list
includes improved aerodynamics, optimized tire characteristics,
weight reduction, water-based paint with lowered organic solvents
emissions, cellulose-based plastic interior parts, and low-friction
brakes and hub bearings for reduced power loss.

Future systems of the hydrogen rotary engine |
Based on the RENESIS hydrogen rotary engine used in the RX-8 Hydrogen RE, Mazda will develop new, more efficient systems which employ Mazda's hybrid system and a turbocharger with electric motor assistance.
The hybrid motor system automatically stops the engine when the vehicle is stationary (idle stop), assists engine torque at low rpm, recoups braking energy to charge the battery, and enhances fuel efficiency.
The electric-motor assist turbo system enables lean combustion at all engine speeds thanks to an electric motor which operates to assist the turbocharger and increase induction efficiency at low rpm.

|
 |
 |
Pre-crash safety technologies |
These advanced technologies include front and rear sensors for crash prediction, and advanced measures to minimize harm to occupants in the event of a collision. When an accident is predicted, the system automatically tightens the seatbelts, applies the brakes and adjusts headrest position.
|
|
 |
 |
Safe-driving support with regard to fatigue |
Safe-driving support includes measures such as route-selection suited to the driver? driving style and how he/she experiences the burden of driving, and appropriate delivery of information and alerts in accordance with driver fatigue as measured in real time by a new algorithm.
