Exhibitors -Nissan Diesel-
Today's fine Saturday had long lines in front of the gates before opening and a reported 7km traffic jam as people took to the road to enjoy the three day weekend, but the flow of traffic to the Tokyo Motor Show was light in comparison. The weekend also brought out more families and middle-age couples than the weekdays.

Meeting the needs for large-capacity transportation
Nissan Diesel's vehicle booth looks narrow because of the bus and large trucks on display. But they have created a layout that is solid and efficient with a second floor observation area where visitors can take in all four reference vehicles. Their show theme of "Carry On" conveys their corporate philosophy to develop new technologies that make vehicles more environment- and people-friendly.
Near the corner of the front gate is a massive 26.5 liter 500 PS 10-cylinder V-type diesel engine. This naturally aspirated engine was developed to meet the needs for large-capacity transportation, and surprises many youth with its specifications. The main stage is the "Big Thumb" heavy-duty tractor, which turns during dancing performances to attract visitors. The new barrier-free "Electric-Hybrid Stepless Bus" with its clean engine and flat aisle construction is attracting attention from all visitors, not just people with a related interest.

Hino Motors
Pushing forward with a winner in the Dakar Rally, the Hino booth
Bringing people comfort, convenience, kindness and fun
For Hino Motors, the most important aspect of exhibiting at the Tokyo Motor Show is displaying their company image to the 1,500,000 potential visitors. The Hino booth displays the Rising Ranger FT in front, the winning vehicle in the Camion Category of the 1997 Dakar Rally, stressing how the harsh conditions of the desert improved their technology to be kinder and more comfortable for people.
The low-slung chassis of the Super Dolphin Profia FW/ Supercab heavy-duty truck has an innovative cab and the largest carrying capacity in Japan, and is displayed as a reference vehicle to show the accomplishment of Hino's "auto-making for life" concept. There is also the Rising Ranger FD, which is CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powered to reduce NOx exhaust emissions for its urban area target market, and has other amenities targeted towards the ever-increasing numbers of women drivers. Moreover, the Rising Ranger FC is remarkable for its world-leading engine featuring an electrically-controlled, common-rail fuel injection system achieving a major reduction in black smoke emissions and much less noise and vibration while idling. The Blue Ribbon HU Low-Floor Bus is also exhibited as a reference exhibit that is scheduled for production. It has a wide front door equipped with a motorized ramp, making it easy to get on and off, even in a wheelchair.

The flared fenders of the M roadster
Advocating "Freude am Farhen" (sheer driving pleasure): M series
At the BMW booth, you can see the powerful M-series lineup which stresses the sporty character of BMW's "sheer driving pleasure". The M coupe reference exhibit is making its first appearance in Japan. The M coupe can be considered a closed roof cousin of the M roadster with two seats and a large luggage compartment. The M roadster, also a reference exhibit, is distinguished as a speedy runner evolved from the Z3 roadster, but with flared fenders to accommodate the wide tires. The front-mounted V8 Z07 is clearly a study model for the Tokyo Motor Show. The BMW booth has a sporty atmosphere, including a display of the McLaren/BMW F1 GTR, a champion racing car in the 1997 Le Mans.
Alpina
As an "official" customizer of BMWs, Alpina produces a highly refined quality car. Alpina arranges its line-up focusing on exactly what a BMW enthusiast would want, and this makes Alpina models attractive and desired vehicles just like the AMGs of Mercedes.

The original cross-country vehicle creates a retro atmosphere, the Defender 90 SW
A quintessential British motorcar
English vehicles have a natural advantage in Japan because of their steering wheel position. This is probably one of the reasons for the long popularity of the Rover Mini. While there are no new models at the Rover booth, there are some limited edition reference models on display, including the genial Defender 90 SW of which only 600 were made.

The Photo Journal System allows real-time publishing
The Photo Journal System (PJS), which is being used to issue this newsletter, is a digital editing environment developed to allow collaboration among photographers, journalists and editors in this digital age. This system stores graphic data (JPEG) taken by a high-resolution digital pre-press camera in database server, and allows journalists to share that data with mass media. A user can choose any picture or journal from thousands of images by accessing the server through the Internet. All issues of the Motor Show News are compiled in both Japanese and English using this system, and more image data will be stored during this Motor Show.
Currently, only exhibitors and members of the press can access the PJS.
